Today we’ve got “sinker man” Glen and his kids on board for what we hope is another day of great tuna action. Listening to the radio chatter from some boats who left crazy early the action seem a much slower. Our first wham-o takes comes around 9:00 when several rods go down at once. The crew finds out that even small yellowfin pull harder than most would ever expect. All the fish are...

Out with the a crew from Advantage Metered Concrete looking for some tuna action. The first 30 minutes is dead but as soon as we hit the 66.5 degree water it’s game on! I’m talking about the stuff tuna dreams are made of. The next couple hours sees constant action. I doubt 15 minutes goes by that we’re not doing battle. Shortly before 11:00 we hit our number. With sore arms and a full box...

Out for what I though was to be a combo trip for tuna and tilefish. Started trolling just outside my favorite golden tilefish hole and after two hours of no action I ask the guys if they’re ready to deep drop but they decide they want to keep tuna fishing. Hearing of a few fish 18 miles south and what seems like a decent bite up north but out of our range Dave pulls the spread and we run 12...

June 14 2019

Today’s hopes of tilefish were crushed by a forecast that was calling for west winds to 25 knots and seas building to 7 feet in the canyons. The crew decided to stay a little closer, still 22 miles off the beach, and try and put a catch of black sea bass together. Ride out wasn’t too bad but when we tried our first drift, 2.4 knots,…..THAT’S NUTS.  Set the anchor knowing it would greatly...

Out with a crew of recently graduated high school guys for a day of black sea bass and shark action. Spent the morning pounding on the sea bass and putting several tasty meals in the box. Threw out the chum bucket and proceeded to set some shark baits. First bite comes after about 45 minutes and we release a 60/70 lb Dusky. The next couple hours provide one more Dusky, two Spinners and two...

Remember Three Dog Night ? One is the Loneliest Number; kinda how I felt crawling through the fog this morning on a forecast that had the entire fleet sitting at dock. Well, all but one.  My guys really wanted tuna but winds up to 35 knots in the canyons changed their minds quickly and a day of Black Sea Bass action was just fine with them. Conditions were surprisingly comfortable despite the...

Ran north today looking for a better tilefish bite than yesterday. First two hours were terrible. With only three fish on the box and hardly any bite I start looking around. Finally around 10:30 the sky brightens the current slacks off a little and the fish start to bite. The next few hours produces a fair catch but a few very respectable golden tiles and the largest swallowtail bass (one...

Threw the lines today with a lot of trepidation for today’s Black Sea Bass trip since the fish are spawning and the reports I’ve been hearing for some of my buddies were horrible. After the first 90 minutes I’m thinking I should have just stayed in bed this morning but after several moves and a crew that seems to have found the trick to getting these tight lipped fish to bite we star...

Pushed 35 miles east today with a crew looking for Jaws. Spent about an hour in the morning catching a couple false albacore (aka: turkeys) for bait. The first 90 minutes of our drift was without a pull but then the Dusky and Sandbars found us and the action was fairly steady the rest of the day with sharks ranging in size from 50 to 175 lbs.
