After two lackluster days of fishing I decide to head to a different area with this father and son(s) trio from PA. After 20 mile and building seas I decide to hang close to the beach since I’m sure the boys will not last in these condition. After a two hours of nothing we are approaching a hill that has been very good to me over the past several years. With less than a ¼ mile to go our long...

Another run to the south with a crew from VA hoping for some tuna. About a dozen and a half boat are working the area but after two hours there have only been 3 yellowfin caught. Most boats move elsewhere but I  decide to continue to pound the area. Finally after another hour or two we get a bite which turns out to be a 45″ “under” bluefin. Ten minutes later we add a nice mahi to the box....

Made a 40 mile run to the south today with a crew from my home area. A miscommunication had us about 30 minutes late to the hill, enough time for several boats to have landed their “overs”. After two hours it was finally our turn and we put a nice bluefin in the box. By now mom isn’t feeling too good and the holiday traffic has the folks worried about the drive home so we call it a day and...

Out with a crew from GA super early looking to repeat yesterdays early bite. After the first few passes I’m starting to get concerned. After 45 minutes I’m starting to freak.  Finally, after about an hour, our long gets blown up on and we have a very angry bluefin on the line. The fish finally make it to the boat but as the mate (Trevor) sinks the gaff the fish goes berserk and nearly take...

The crazy boat traffic weekend begins with the Fin Chaser arriving at the tuna grounds early looking for a couple bites before the boat traffic shut things down. First bite takes about ten minutes. Next bite takes another ten, but both fish come unbuttoned midway through the fight.  A few more passes and we finally have a fish that manages to stay tight all the way to the gaff.  A few minutes...

Today’s nasty forecast was no deterrent for this bachelor party from MD. Five minutes into the day we have our first fish on and after an great battle Dave sinks the gaff into the fat 110# bluefin. The next two hours produce only one bite but lots of chumming by a couple of the crew due to a little too much fun the night before. Things are now starting to get real sporty and one fellow isn’t...

Out with Elam and the boys from Kauffman’s Fruit Farm for a day of offshore action. Ran south 50 miles on a rumor of bluefin but after 90 minutes and only one false albacore and seeing NO other boats I assume it was just a worthless story. Make the 20 mile run out to the Washington Canyon and join all the boats making circles. Many of these boats have been here all morning and are still waiting...

Spent today with an awesome crew from PA. Unfortunately the captain wasn’t so awesome. Try as I may I  just couldn’t find any fish. Back in the slip a little early with one small yellowfin in the box.

One big blow and our bluefin have vanished! Spent the last two days pounding the bluefin grounds but all we could manage was one under bluefin, a fat 50# yellowfin and four nice mahi.

Pushed east today with a crew of three looking for some tuna action before the forecast 25 knot winds hit us. The first 45 minutes are non spectacular but that quickly changes when I turn on some small tunas working some bait right next to the boat. POW four rods go off as the big bluefin who must have been under the “shorts” explode on our baits. The first fish gets the gaff, a 60″ 120#...
