05/17/24 thru 05/19/24
Not the beginning to the season we were hoping for. Big wind the first two days of the Sea Bass season kept the fleet at dock. The 3rd day, Friday, looked doable….kind of. Told the guys it would be very sporty and no problem if they didn’t wanted to bag it. In true Viking fashion the call was made, LETS GO! Battled seriously nautical conditions a slow bite and three of the Vikings wishing they’d have stayed on solid land to put together a meager catch. Wasn’t surprised with no more than two rods fishing at any given point the entire day. I was totally shocked when all of the crew returned for a second day on Saturday. Perhaps there is some Scandinavian blood in these guys after all. Saturdays conditions and the bite were much better most of the time seeing 3 to 4 rods fishing. Back in the slip with a nice bag of about 40 sea bass. Certainly not huge numbers but some very quality fishing mixed in with the 13 inchers. Hit the inlet on Sunday with some trepidation since the forecast was all over the place. Pushed through the chop and wind to find the seas and winds turned pretty nice around the 15 mile mark. Four hours of bottom fishing with a crew of 5 new graduates yielded a nice jag of keepers before setting up on a nearly wreck looking for a shark. Continued to mess with the sea bass and dogfish while waiting for for jaws but the wait only produced one shark bite on the deep rod that missed the hook by 2 inches and the fish never came back.
