June 2022 Report

June 2022 Report

June begins Fin Chaser's offshore season. Most of these trips we're targeting tuna but some tilefish trips continue to be run as well. Wind turned into a real issue this year as well as the large biomass of fish holding 100+ miles from our inlet for some of the month. Our tuna trips yielded modest results with some slower days being offset by great catches of tilefish for those who wish to try...

May 2022 Report

Our season began on May 15th 2022. The first two weeks we targeted black sea bass with good results. Most of our crews limited out despite the new increased size limit. Late in the month we ran a trip for blueline tilefish with great results while continuing to run black sea bass trips.

Tuna fishing continues with the addition of a couple "Greenstick" fish and some "Chunking" fish too.  One stud yellowfin tipped the scales @ 93# and was landed on 40 lb. leader! No big impressive catches for us, we're just plugging away trying to put fish in the box on a daily basis. The new combo trips are a big hit this season and the tilefish continue to impress everyone with size and...

Our tuna have been a little lacking over the last couple trips. One thing that isn't lacking is this darn wind which has caused some dates to be rescheduled.  Seems the large biomass of yellowfin is fading, looking for a new push of fish to show with some of this wind. While the catches have been lees than spectacular I'm just happy to see fish in the box. Some dang good boats have been getting...

Tuna fishing continues to be good but spotty. Tilefish bite is outstanding with some very respectable double digit bluelines going in the box. Our combo trip allows crews to experience both. Blow-days are salvageable with some 175-300 lb sand tiger sharks for crews that are interested. Some turn up their noses but the flexible crews find out that most single anglers can't start and finish one of...

Bite has been ok over the past week. If you're lucky enough to roll the dice and land on some active fish you're a hero. Go there the very next day and only a few boats catch. These buggers just don't seem to hang in one area more than a day or two making the morning decision tough. Our catches have been kinda average but the weather, pulled hooks and a little angler error now and then have...

Every now and then  you have a truely epic day of fishing you'll remember for a long time, today was one of those days. Arrived at the grounds around 7 am. First bite took about 15 minutes. The next 2 hours was mind blowing. 24 yellowfin and 18 in the box by 8:40 am! Back in the slip by 11;30 am. Almost in time for a late breakfast.  Knowing the word would get out and a flat calm forecast we...

The yellowfin bite continues. Sunday's action was ok but WAY too many under size fish. Monday and Tuesday was much better with more keepers and only a couple throw backs. Everyone is looking for that one good "hit" when four, six or eight rods go down all at once. Our high so far has been five managing to hold on to four of them. No people in the pic from the 15th out of respect for our Amish...

Our Bluefin action continues to be good but still seeing mostly BLT (barely legal tuna) size fish. Yellowfin started to chew the afternoon of the 9th as my crew was hammering the sea bass & tiles after starting the day with some hot bluefin action. The bite, for most boats, was VERY tough on the 10th. We only managed two fish, one bluefin and our first yellowfin of the year. Not much to brag...

Impressive bluefin bite over the last couple day. Unfortunately, the size is less than impressive. Seems nearly all of these fish are running 28-33 inches. Some days the limit of three "unders" takes less than 10 minutes so for those crews who wish to add more meat to the box and don't mind spending some extra coin the deep drop fishing for tilefish and sea bass has been outstanding.
