An early leave for this extended trip with a crew of four from southeastern PA. Expecting to crush the tuna, based on the chunking results from the day before, we’re loaded for bear with ice and bait. Our hopes quickly fade as two hours pass and I only see two fish caught among the 20 some boats around us. The decision is made to make the 20 mile run in hopes of filling the box with tilefish. Fortunately those fish want to play and it seems like in no time at all we’ve reached our limit. Now we have a dilemma, what to do for the rest of the day especially since its apparent the tuna bite hasn’t gotten any better according to buds I’ve been talking with on the radio. We decide to make a 13 mile run and work a string of red crab gear in hopes of adding some mahi to the box. We arrive at the northern end of the string only to find a small outboard boat heading our way from the south going pot to pot. I pull past 8 sets of gear and only have one micro mahi attack. TD throws out a “catch all” spread and we troll toward the tip of the poormans canyon. Just inside the tip, as I’m yacking on the VHF, the mate notices some bait on the surface so I make a tight circle and POW! We get Jumped by a couple yellowfin. But in typical fashion with the rest of the day they’re all too short to keep. I work that area for another 45 minutes but only capture one more undersize yellowfin. Back in the slip with a limit of timefish and a crew that I hope gives OC fishing one more chance.
