With the chunking bite on the way out and most of the crews wanting to fill the freezer we've been putting the baits on the bottom over the last few days and hammering some truely monster blueline tilefish. Almost every fish over the last few days is above average and limits come fairly easy as long as the current doesn't get ripping too fast.

Back to the normal grind after the past week of the WMO finds us chunking for yellowfin tuna 40 miles off the beach. Nothing for the first 90 minutes but then someone flips the switch. During the next two hours we go 3 for 5 and have an additional 4 short bites. Sometime around 9:30 the switch get flipped off and the bites end for the fleet and the day.

A day of tilefish action between our last two days of tournament fishing in 400' of water near the Baltimore Canyon. The action was fantastic and the size was definitely above  average with a couple hammers thrown too. Back in the slip early with a limit of tiles for this local crew.

White Marlin Open Week

Our WMO starts with a big decision for the two guys from NYC. Enter, despite the pending storm, or wait until next year. The guys decide they wanna fish and go for it. Our plan, forget the marlin and go after the tuna money. Monday arrives and the forecast is very dicey so we decide to use our lay-day. This is a decision we will come to regret since a few boats braved the forecast and the bluefin...

Ran east today in some seas that were far from what was forecast was calling for. After 2.5 hours of no action and two of our youngest anglers not doing well we make the decision to make a big run back inside and try for some spanish mackerel in some calmer conditions. The bite was good and the seas were much more tolerable for some in the crew.

Very early leave for today's yellowfin trip. Joeys sets the first floater bait and as he is putting out the second floater the first rod takes off....fish on!  The next two hours are absolutely crazy and when the dust settles we've gone six for eight. Similar to the previous day sometime around 8:30 am these crazy tuna go into lockjaw mode. We continue to fish through the torrential downpours...

Pushed east in some very sporty seas with Hans and his crew in hopes of wrangling some tuna for the freezer. First bite happens just minutes into the day and after a 25 minute struggle on 30 lb. leader we put our first tuna in the box. The rest of the day sees five more bites. Two end in success after crazy long battles, one ends quickly as the fish finds another gear and smokes the reel giving...

Out with a crew of Foodies from DE that included Matt Kern Chef at Heirloom Restaurant as well as Nate Leonard who is in the process of authoring a cookbook for Schell Brother Homes for a day of tuna chunking. The bite was slow but we did manage to capitalize on three out of four bites resulting in three nice fat yellowfin tuna.

Our chunking bite has definitely slowed down prompting many to look toward tilefish or a combo of tilefish and tuna. Those sticking to their guns and spending the day chunking were seeing between 2 and 4 bites per day yielding one or two fish. The crews that decided to do a combo or straight tilefish trip saw outstanding action and size on the blueline tilefish and a yellowfin or two to tug on....

On the heels of the epic chunking day I'm out with a trio from NJ in hopes the fish are still interested in eating after gorging themselves yesterday. The morning is slow with only two pulls and one in the box. Pull the anchor and decide to try some drifting for the afternoon. Our second drift hits pay dirt and we put three more nice yellowfin in the box. Final drift has two run-offs that don't...
