Made the big run south with Tan’s fishing team looking for some fresh yellowfin to throw on the grill for the 4th. Our first bite comes shortly into the day when Joeys mid rigger bait gets nailed and the first yf goes in the box. Two more passes over the same spot and my long rigger gets slammed. Seems like a good fish. 10 minutes late, a very good fish. Twenty minutes later and I tell the guys I’m fairly certain we have a big eye on. After an hour and twenty minutes, all six guys twice on the rod, and the fish in sight 25′ from the gaff the stupid hook pulls from the 225-250# fish. By now we’re well into the morning and the bites that were happening prior to our battle have seemingly stopped. Spent the rest of the day working all over the canyon weaving in and out of all the other boats doing the exact same thing with no results. With 30 minutes left in the day I decide to swing through the area where we got our early bites and within 100 yards of that spot my two bridge rods take off and were able to add two nice yellowfins to the box before we need to head home.
