May 25 & May 26 2018

A tale of two trips. Great to be back on the water after last weekends crazy rain. Friday’s trip finds us in calm seas with some very eager sharks. Takes about an hour for our first bite but after that it was game-on releasing four blue sharks to 120# and three mako sharks to 100#. Finished the day playing with some sea bass.  Saturday finds us in very sporty conditions and tight lipped...

Opening day of Sea Bass found us leaving the dock a little late. No big deal until we get to the wreck I was hoping to drop on and another boat is already sitting there. Ran another couple miles to an area that’s normally good. First few hours was mixed, one drift would produce a couple for the box and then nothing. Moved around all day working any bite I could fine to try and bend a rod....

May 11 & May 12 2018

Two pretty tough days of Tog fishing. Friday’s bite was the better of the two and lasted until about noon at which time the current started screaming out of the north and the bite immediately shut down. Saturday was plain terrible. Current against the wind had the boat laying sideways in the trough, horrible slow bite and flies getting blown off the land from the SW winds. Sent each crew home...

Much nice conditions and much better action than yesterday. Spent the day working one area with a steady stream of 15″ fish coming over the rail. Fortunately there were enough keepers mixed in with the throw backs to keep everyone interested. Back in the slip with 11 in the box. The guys went back to PA with two heavy bags full of those oh so tasty fillets.

Back on the water again…finally! Broke the inlet and received a rude slap-in-the-face on Friday. Pushed through pretty sporty conditions for a few miles before setting the anchor over our first tog hole of this five hour trip. Bite started off red hot but within thirty minutes slacked off to nothing. Moved to two other wreck with no change in the action. With 90 minutes left in the day we make...

Pushed east for 18 miles in some fairly sporty condition that arrived way earlier than called for. The sea bass bite (for those who took the little white pills last night) was great while the keeper to throwback ratio wasn’t so good, about 4 to 1. With a nice box full of fish and before the super nasty wind hits we head back to OC about an hour early. Sent 40 sea bass and 7 bluefish to the...

Roll the dice heading for the offshore waters trusting there are still a few mahi hanging around in our quickly cooling water. First hour of trolling doesn’t produce anything until we happen upon a few lobster balls. Spent the next few hours picking away at some mahi before sending baits to the bottom for tilefish and sea bass. Back in the slip with 10 mahi and 12 sea bass/tilefish in the box.

Another mahi trip, more gear. With 6 miles left to go I notice a poly ball and high flyer free floating all by itself. Dave throws out a quick 4 rod spread and we make a pass. WHAM!! every rod goes down with some super nice fish. The next few hours is awesome, both light tackle and trolling gear. These are the best class of fish we’ve had so far this season. Nearly all are solid gaffers and...

Rescheduled trip from earlier this fall finds me running 55 mile east toward some gear we hope is holding fish. First couple pots only produce one/two fish each. Moved to a second string that had some better numbers. The guys were loving the light tackle action and beautiful fish. By days end we had a nice box full of those “oh so tasty” mahi.

Two days of sea bass research with Reed and his crew. The bite was outstanding and some of these fish….Very Nice Size, some super size triggerfish too!  If today is any kind of barometer the opening day of sea bass season (this Sunday 10/22) should be awesome…and I have it available if anyone wants to fill their freezer before winter.
