Left super early today with Steve Kauffman and his crew from Honeybook, PA for our first 18 hour trip of the season. Arrived at the bluefin grounds and set the spread in the dark. First bite takes less than five minutes and we put our first under in the box. Next pass adds another under to the box. 45 minutes later the long rigger take off and these guys find out just how hard these overs can pull. After a good fight we add him to the box. By now the area is covered with boats and the fish I’ve been marking at 50′ are now tight to the bottom. After releasing a 42′ Ocean I decide to troll to a different area about 3 miles away. As soon as we arrive our bar gets crushed and we put our final bluefin in the box. With our limit of bluefin I make a 35 mile run to the deep. The first hour produces one 40 lb. yellowfin, two throw back yellowfins and one gaffer mahi. The next couple hours are slow with only two throw back yellowfin and two more three more mahi. Sometime around 3:30 the boats left and the fish got real active. The next hour and a half is great. Every pass multiple rods go down. Sometimes they’re all throw backs and sometimes a 40-50 pounder too. By 5:00 we’ve released at least 15 and added four more YF to the box. Back in the slip two hours early allowing these guys extra time for fish cleaning and the 3 hour drive home. Fill in anglers pictured out of respect for our Amish friends.
